The Critics

An art critic can make or break an artist's career and the writers on this page have all done their bit to ensure that the British public is spared the fatuous bromides churned out by provincial painters. But London art criticism is a catholic church and you will have to look long and hard to find any common ground between the major players mentioned below who now strut the city's white cubes.

Giles Montague Guff

Byam Sellem

Gloria Summers-Day

Jean-Luc Prétentieux

Sasha Kant

Free-thinking buccaneers to a man and woman, none of these towering intellects could ever be accused of pandering to the market or shoring up the battlements of some notional art world clique. True, the ravages of alcoholism have played havoc with their critical faculties over the years, but this is only to be expected given the dizzying round of openings they are obliged to attend when twenty or thirty glasses of cauterising Bulgarian wine is the only protection against the legions of wannabees and rich-bitch collectors who frequent such events.
