Artnose in the News

De Morgen

In December 2002, Artnose ran a spoof news story about how new research appeared to establish that the so-called 'Elgin Marbles' (The Parthenon Marbles) had not been made by Greek artist Pheidias after all, but by an Englishman, Phil Davies, who changed his name to Pheidias after moving to Athens.

The Belgian broadsheet, De Morgen (Belgium's equivalent of the Daily Telegraph), picked up this story, assuming it to be true and ran a full-page item (right) in their weekend edition, headlined 'Elgin Marbles were made by an Englishman'.

This was in turn taken up by The Guardian, who poured playful scorn on the credulous Belgians.
